WHAT IS PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY?

Paediatric dentistry is the practice of providing therapeutic oral healthcare for children and adolescents. Problems that may emerge during the eruption of primary teeth can worsen when permanent teeth come through, making early diagnosis crucial.

The most common problems treated in paediatric dentistry are caries, injuries, malocclusion problems, and genetic alterations in the number, size, shape, structure or shade of the teeth.

PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE IN CHILDREN IS VITAL FOR GOOD
ORAL HEALTH IN THE FUTURE.

When should you visit a pediatric dentist?

While the first visit was previously recommended from the age of 2 or 3, it now indicated that this first visit should be brought forward to the child’s first year of life. This helps children to get used to dental visits, lose their fear of the dentist, and learn the importance of taking care of their oral hygiene and eating habits.

Paediatric dentistry can also detect bad habits like dummy use or thumb sucking and common problems like cavities, eruption issues, misaligned teeth, and injuries.

No matter the child’s age, if parents or guardians notice changes in the colour of the child’s primary teeth or if a tooth has sustained damage, they must visit a paediatric dentist as soon as possible.

What is a paediatric dentist?

Paediatric dentists, or children’s dentists, are oral health professionals who provide comprehensive prevention and treatment for children’s oral health from birth to adolescence.

These dental professionals use different techniques and methods compared to those applied to adults. They also draw on specific knowledge; as children’s teeth and mouths constantly form and develop, the dental problems in this age group differ from those in adults.

Early childhood caries

Early childhood caries, or tooth decay, is a multifactorial disease characterized by the destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth due to demineralization caused by acids produced by dental plaque.

Dental plaque consists of bacteria that feed on food debris accumulated in the mouth and release acids that eventually destroy the layers of the tooth.

Childhood caries is a common but preventable disease. High sugar consumption, poor oral hygiene, or lack of fluoride in tooth enamel increases the risk of developing caries.

The main symptoms of childhood caries are pain, inflammation, difficulty eating, and a greater likelihood of developing cavities in permanent teeth.

Children's orthodontics

Paediatric orthodontics is a branch of paediatric dentistry that specializes in preventing and correcting anomalies in the shape and position of the teeth and in the relationship between the jaws by means of brackets.

Paediatric orthodontics aims to identify the growth process of the jaw structures and anticipate possible occlusion and bite problems that may develop at the end of the child’s growth stage.

For example, we perform first-phase orthodontics, which involves widening the palate to prepare it for subsequent orthodontic treatment.

Children’s orthodontics, therefore, is both a preventive and treatment technique that guides teeth directly and acts to avoid incorrect dental development.

INVISALIGN TEEN

Invisalign Teen is the adolescent version of the renowned Invisalign aesthetic orthodontic system.

Like the adult version, the Invisalign Teen method can help correct tooth misalignment problems.

The system is also based on discreet clear aligners that are changed every two weeks.

These aligners have a huge aesthetic benefit, as they are customized to fit each person’s mouth and are practically imperceptible to others.
