Oral Restoration and Prostheses
A Dental prosthesis is a dental appliance designed to restore the anatomy of one or more missing teeth and re-establish the ideal height between the upper and lower jaw.
Prostheses are designed to restore the mouth’s functionality, including chewing, swallowing, speech, and aesthetics.
Depending on their anchorage or retention system, there are several types of prostheses:
FIXED DENTAL PROSTHESES
This type is placed over natural teeth or implants and cannot be removed by the patient. Fixed prostheses closely resemble natural teeth.
They restore normal masticatory function and aesthetics, and the patient feels them as if they were their teeth.
They require the same care as natural teeth: proper daily hygiene and twice-yearly maintenance visits to the dentist.
REMOVABLE PROSTHESIS
This type is placed over natural teeth or implants Therefore, they can be easily removed by the patient without the need to visit a dentist. Removable prostheses can be partial or complete (replacing all the teeth).
They usually rest on the adjacent mucosa and teeth, if present.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS MUST DENTAL PROSTHESES HAVE?
THEY MUST BE FUNCTIONAL, ALLOWING CORRECT SPEECH AND CHEWING.
THEY MUST BE AESTHETIC: RESEMBLING THE OTHER TEETH IN SIZE, SHAPE AND SHADE.
THEY MUST HAVE SUFFICIENT RETENTION TO AVOID MISALIGNMENT DURING CHEWING AND SPEAKING.
